Students

Students at the Liberty School have a variety of personalities, interests and talents. Our students are children who:

  • want to understand the structure of things
  • recognize connections between ideas and experiences
  • are fascinated by the “whys” of a problem
  • want to know how things work
  • are intrigued by challenges
  • demand much of themselves and sometimes of those close to them
  • wonder deeply about things
  • often develop a strong interest and knowledge-base in a topic

Our students have often previously experienced emotional and academic frustration with materials and instruction presented in inappropriate ways:

  • dyslexic and twice exceptional students need to be taught in a systematic, sequential, congnitive, multi-sensory way, insuring mastery of the language
  • gifted students need minimal repetition and drill to master information
  • all students respond positively to a challenging, well-designed, individualized environment tailored to their individual strengths and needs

Many of our students exhibit innovativeness in their thinking, and sophistication in their questions and mental connections. At the Liberty School our focus is on these qualitative needs and abilities of our students. We provide opportunities in which they will explore ideas and grapple with challenging problems while assuring they develop a mastery of the basic tools of learning.

Our goal is not to move children quickly through a standard curriculum; rather, it is to assure that they have the basic tools, ability, and guidance to approach challenges with creativity, self-confidence and ingenuity. Simultaneously, we provide many opportunities to develop positive self-esteem, social skills and strong character.
